Counselling and therapy based in Glasgow

Welcome, and thank you for visiting the JHS webpages

My name is Jo Purvis MBACP; MNCPS (Acc.) and I am a qualified integrative counsellor. I offer in-person, online and telephone counselling in Glasgow (and can offer online or telephone counselling to people living anywhere else in the UK).

As an integrative counsellor I draw upon the Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, and Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) modalities whilst using a trauma-informed approach. This allows me to adapt how we work together to best suit your needs and the issues you are experiencing whilst working within the BACP’s Ethical Framework and required professional competency level.

I hold a Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy (accredited by COSCA) and continue to train and develop in the modalities I practice, as well as additional areas.

I have also completed specific training recognised by NCPS in working with counselling clients online and over the telephone.

I was drawn to a career in counselling and psychotherapy as someone passionate about supporting and accompanying people while they navigate their journey in life. I believe in the transformative benefits of counselling that can empower us to live with greater peace, self-understanding and a stronger sense of personal value, while developing effective coping skills and increased resilience to bolster us during difficult times.

I have been employed in professional supporting roles for over 18 years (including mentoring, advice and guidance), and have had the honour of engaging with people from a diverse range of backgrounds and age groups. Additionally, I have specific experience and undertaken training in offering support to people who identify as LGBTQ, people who are neurodiverse and people who have relocated to the UK from other parts of the world.

How can counselling help?

Speak in confidence

There comes a time in everyone’s life that they become aware of the need for change; the need to reach out for support. Specific life events, ongoing situations, unwanted patterns of behaviour, relationship struggles and scripts we seem to find ourselves acting out can affect us profoundly.

We can reach the point of feeling overwhelmed, scared, stuck, misunderstood, lonely, stressed, or ineffectual. Each day can be a struggle to think or feel good enough, acceptable, valuable or to feel comfortable in your own skin.

Counselling can offer a space where you can access support and begin to change. To learn skills and endure difficulties with self-compassion and resilience.

I offer a non-judgemental, supportive, and confidential space in which to express your thoughts, feelings and experiences at a pace that is comfortable for you. My aim is to facilitate discovery; uncover ways to withstand and embrace life with comfort and curiosity, to honour your needs, learn how to soothe yourself and engage with positive, sustainable growth.

Move towards positive change

Your individuality, values and goals will always help guide how we work together to support your journey towards a more positive, grounded, authentic and resilient life.

How I work

I am an integrative counsellor who will suggest ways of working together from the three main counselling modalities (Person-Centred, Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). I am a Registered Member of BACP and an Accredited Member of NCPS; I work within the ethical framework of my professional membership bodies.

I have a keen interest in some of the research-based somatic therapies, including polyvagal theory, and also continue to train and develop in these areas. These recognise how the physiological and neurological effects of trauma may present or be experienced in our bodies and identifies ways of considering the body in therapeutic work. Where appropriate and welcomed, this may for example allow us to include some meditation, breathwork or sensation awareness in our work.

Fees & sessions

Initial consultation:

Counselling sessions may be offered online or in person, depending on your needs. If you would like to arrange a free 15 minute initial consultation where we can discuss any questions you might have please contact me by e-mail.

Where you indicate you would like to start counselling, I will e-mail you with resources and details of what to expect from my service, including a counselling contract. Once you have signed and returned the contract, we can then arrange our first appointment together (an initial assessment appointment).

How much a session will cost:

Payment of session fees are to be received a minimum of 48 hours before the agreed appointment time and made via bank transfer.

An initial assessment appointment will cost £30; the counselling appointments that follow will cost £40 per session.

However, I offer a discounted counselling session fee of £35 to students currently registered with a UK college, university or counselling training provider at the time they commence counselling (please provide me with evidence of your course enrolment when returning your signed contract).

How appointments will work:

The first counselling appointment we would have together would be an “initial assessment session”. Here we would explore your situation, needs and aims for counselling in more detail as part of co-creating a “contract” for our work together.

The initial assessment session will be 60 minutes long. After the end of the initial assessment session, I will e-mail you a reminder of the time, date and location / Zoom link for our next appointment within the following 24 hours.

The subsequent counselling appointments we have together will always begin on the hour and will be 50 minutes in duration. Appointments will be booked on the same day of each week (although sometimes it may be appropriate to arrange fortnightly appointments), and at the same time.

After the end of each counselling session, I will e-mail you a reminder of the time, date and location / Zoom link for our next appointment within the following 24 hours.

About my pricing structure and appointment related policies:

The session fee will remain the same for the duration of time we work together and will not increase (however if you later become eligible for a reduced student fee the price will decrease in keeping with this change).

Part of each session fee will cover the costs of the room booking or online meeting platform we use to meet, as well as my other business costs (including my insurance, professional membership and other specific mandatory costs related to offering a professional and ethical counselling service). The remaining money is effectively my “wage” as a self-employed professional (to cover my living costs etc).

I offer a professional and consistent service with relevant boundaries appropriate to a successful therapeutic relationship and experience. Part of this way of working includes agreement of the appointment booking, payment, cancellation and partial-refund policies.

I would like to note that I will be accommodating and flexible with appointment change requests wherever reasonably possible, as I understand unexpected things can (and do!) crop up from time to time. My policies are discussed in more detail in the contract I send to each client before the initial assessment appointment, however you can see an overview here:

• If you are unable to attend a session and need to cancel for any reason, please let me know via e-mail and within the 48 hours before the session start time wherever possible. It may sometimes be possible to reschedule our appointment to another day or time the same week, and then return to our usual routine after then.

• If you need to change the time and day we meet on a permanent basis, please contact me via e-mail so we can discuss and look into arranging this.

• In the case of appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours notice the retained portion of the session fee are to contribute towards the business costs associated with providing my counselling service / appointments, including potential lost income.
